Hello fellow investigators! Not doing anything special, chilling in your bed and just decided to check ArkhamDB for some interesting new decks? No problem, i got you covered.

If i'm gonna be honest to you, i never enjoyed playing Marie. There, i said it. Since i usually play this game with my friends, i usually play in 2-4 player parties. When i play solo, i never even thought about Marie. Stacking your cards with doom? No thanks, doesn't really seem valuable to me, and too risky since i swear to God i somehow shuffle 100 cards in mythos deck but 2 copies of Ancient Evils are always in the first 3 cards. After some time when i dived into The Circle Undone expansion, my eye caught a very nasty card called De Vermis Mysteriis . It intrigued me, but i never gave it a chance since i somehow made it pure Daisy card in my head. Boy was i wrong. Almost a year after that, i present to you my first published deck on this site.


This deck is meant for pure solo, and i doubt it will work as well in group play, it will most likely need some adjustments as the number of clues and enemies will increase a lot, but hey, if you wanna play it then be my guest.

For unexperienced guys among us, and some of you who are not so sure in playing solo and wonder how to improve, here's a bit of advice. In theory, investigators are pretty good solo, since they have cards like Rite of Seeking and Shrivelling and they are pretty resilient to mythos deck, right?

-Well, yes, but no. Let me explain.

When you play solo, any campaign, your most precious resource are actions. You need to be able to play your key assets and go right at it, and since you don't have a lot of actions to play those assets, that logically means that if an investigator needs a lot of assets to start going, he ain't gonna be very good for solo in most cases. Mystics are the perfect example for it here. If you put some of the most popular solo investigators on the table, like for example : Wendy Adams, Ursula Downs, Patrice Hathaway, Finn Edwards, Leo Anderson, "Ashcan" Pete, and on the other hand put every single character to see why the above listed guys perform so much better, you will quickly notice that these guys above just go fast. They can fail and still get things done if they are folks, guys like Leo have built-in free action for the most powerful asset in the game, an ally. And then there are guys like Ursula and Finn who just don't care for the encounter deck and just run as fast as they can through the scenario. As you see, investigators lack a lot of those things. They need assets to fight or get clues. Thank you for my TED talk, i apologize for it.

Now, why the hell would i play Marie if i can just play some better characters solo, you may ask? Well there are a couple of things. She has a base of 4, which means she is good to go from turn 1 without any setup. You don't need your assets to investigate. Her is 1 but her is 3, which is great for us, since we will never use combat stat for anything, but that 3 agi can come in real handy with some encounter cards or desperate evasion attempts.

How does this deck work? The best card of the deck, and also a key one, is definitely De Vermis Mysteriis. In the last cycle they gave us some awesome spell events like Spectral Razor and Read the Signs, and in solo play they are just perfect. Well, how about using them 4 times per scenario each, and also giving you an extra action? Well that is just insane value right there folks. As you can see this deck seems pretty expensive to run, but when you play it you will realize that it is very cheap. Ever since Robes of Endless Night was released, this deck just sky rocketed to another dimension. And then there is Innsmouth cycle which is only deluxe box in, and we have already gotten the most valuable skill in it, and that is Promise of Power. That card is just bonkers.

Most of Marie decks will have Hawk-Eye Folding Camera in it, but i decided to cut it out since it takes our precious hand slot, and we need both of them for our current cards. Promise of Power made me cut Unexpected Courage and rather put in 2x Prophesy since it will almost always be 2? icons, and cutting the camera gave us 2 precious slots for seeker cards which you wanna invest into Practice Makes Perfect for even more awesome skills listed above. Enraptured comes in pretty handy since we investigate with our and are able to refill cards like Shrivelling or Scroll of Prophecies . Blood Pact is just a cherry on top, and you can abuse it for almost every test during witching hour.

The biggest hit this deck took was the latest taboo which made Knowledge is Power unavailable to Marie. That was a big hit, but it is all good now, we have to adjust. If you still wanna play it, then just cut out 2x Crack the Case and put it right in. Crack the Case is in here just if we don't find Robes soon, and burst of 2-3 resources is pretty good.

If you wanna try this deck from 0 xp then just downgrade the cards like Shrivelling and Robes, and focus a bit more on boosting your and with cards like Guts and Perception.

Also if you come to this point during campaign and don't know what to invest in further, then you should know that the plan for upgrade is Arcane Studies, and if you play TCU then most likely Alter Fate

In summary, it's a pretty simple deck as you can see. Play strong events for almost no resources, gain extra actions, and win some scenarios.

Nice succint summary of why Mystics aren't usually great for solo, Marie's 4 and bonus action helps out a lot with this, as you say. I actually recently did a PMP Marie solo deck that I was pretty impressed with. Promise of Power is, indeed, amazing.

However, the actual reason why I am making this comment is to say that Taboo added experience doesn't actually affect the level of the card. That means that Marie can still take Knowledge is Power, though she does still have to spend the XP for it.

As a final note, the taboo Scroll of Secrets buff was pretty amazing, and you might want to try it over Scroll of Prophecies at some point. Not having to spend an action to draw a card from it along with the protection against drawing weaknesses is pretty excellent. You can still get a ton of extra uses out of it with Enraptured. Admittedly, it probably doesn't get through your deck quite as fast as Scroll of Prophecies, but I think it's well worth it. My deck did also have Initiate, though.
