I've never played Jim Culver and what's more, I've never played alongside him in a campaign on Expert difficulty, so I have no idea what I'm doing. But I figure something like this might work.

Am I missing something?

In addition to upping spells and Living Ink, I'll want to grab a copy of Four of Cups, but I have basically no idea if there's some Jim Culver staple I'm not thinking of.

I'm not an Expert on Expert (pun intended), but one thing I can tell you from having Jim in my party: Neither count on having Jims Trompete out, nor count on it doing anything. As soon as you have played it, the old gods will make sure nobody ever draws a out of the bag >.< But seriously, we had him in a 4 player game and in the whole campaign, he was able to play it maybe 3 times and I think it triggered once (in 8 scenarios...) You don't have much draw (except for Kristallpendel), which is kind of common for Mystics, but this also means you will likely not see it =(

As a side note: You are aware that base Granny Orne does not allow you to succeed on a test thats failed by 1? You have already failed, she just changes by how much (which can often use). 3XP Granny Orne does allow you to get a success, but Jim can't take her.

@Wild Thanks, yeah, makes sense. Granny is only there for the .

@Wild Granny Orne is the only 0 exp ally that grants . On Expert, typically the most powerful thing one can do is just to get as high a passive primary stat as the investigator can muster. I figured the trumpet wasn't going to be life changing. It slightly encouraged me to take Arcane Research and made me avoid hand slot items, but I wasn't going to try and fish it out of the deck with a backpack or what not, haha. It feels like there should be more ways to use the stuff than I'm thinking, but maybe it's just generally OK if it just improves my average result.

Right, I always forget, that Mystic doesn't have that many allies, that give in the first place, good point.
yeah, we had "the Jim discussion" a lot in my group, where we always come to the conclusion, that his reliance on tokens is just too unrealiable and we think he should get some kind of buff.
There is also Lied der Toten, but again, way to unreliable.
One thing I'd recommend though (to at least have a bit more fun) is checking which campaign has the most tokens and then playing that with him. As he is heavily reliant on that, playing him in a campaign with like 3/19 tokens just feels bad.
