As part of the CRANK DAT JANK UP series, there's enough jank already to deal with, no need to worry about taboo compliance. There's no question it is a suboptimal deck.
A little backstory here: In this little world, Dexter hasn't been a great magician. For all his trickery, he's got to lean on illicit ways to achieving his deceptive goals. Even when he joined the magician's circle, where real mystics use real magic, Dexter barely learnt any spells.
Make no mistake, Dexter Drake is a fake. He did not put in the hard yards for fake magic, and he's certainly not put in the hard yards for real magic. He'll scoot at the first sign of danger and leave you to your own devices, all the while scooping up clues to himself. He has however made a craft of smoke and mirrors. In the blink of an eye, his repertoire unfolds and changes, and you are never certain what is in front of him. All you know...is that everything is fake.
I thought Dexter had really interesting ability with swapping out assets. The problem is, if you don't have assets out, then you're just cycling with your limited options. In comes Fence: A levelled up Rogue card that chucks out so many illicit items as a fast action. And if you need, swap something out with his ability after you are done with it.
This Dexter primarily investigates for clues, but he can flex every once in a while. Mind's eye is the key asset that he has to try to maintain. With it out, he can use his base 5 to throw at whatever he might need.
Try to mulligan for Fence. Mulliganing for Mind's eye also gives you a little breathing space. You may notice there are 26 assets. Some investigators may play the game and have a measly 3-5 assets in front of them throughout the game. Not this guy. It is a an army of assets that he unfolds, and it gives him options. The more he puts out, the more options he has for what he can swap out from in his hand. All the Rogue items are illicit, so with Fence out you can churn them out as fast. It's scary, but he can do some work with his willpower. He always should have options: using Fence to get something out, so you can swap it in later for a discount with his ability. Then he can spend more time doing actions, albeit most of the time with Mind's eye.
Testing wise, I did try a slightly altered version of him at Carnevale, and he held his own! I guess he really raises his game when performances and the spotlight is involved.
I'd speak more highly of him, but that's as much as you'll get from me. The guy still owes me from the time he scammed me at the last show. You hear me Dexter Drake? You FAKE! And I promise the whole world shall know. I'll GET BACK AT YOU!
