Agenda

If this agenda advanced by reaching its doom threshold:

The mournful wail cascades over you like a wave of death. The specter - a ghostly image of a woman long since murdered - is beyond any hope of a peaceful afterlife. She seeks only vengeance, so that others might join her in purgatorial restlessness. You've killed for her once before and now, facing the full power of her undying gaze - black as the endless abyss - you're ready to do it again. Guest and staff alike fall by your hand until you collapse on the floor, soaked in the blood of innocents.

If this agenda advanced because you completed its objective:

The locket rests in your open hand and you consider it now, standing in the sudden silence of the hotel. It seems such a simple thing, but this memento of dark events had a hand in the turmoils of the Excelsior, despite its unassuming appearance. You slide it into your pocket and turn toward the door, breathing a bit easier. You find some measure of comfort in knowing that the strange goings-on of the Excelsior have been put to rest, at least for now.

Possible rule oversight about this card.

This agenda adds an activation ability to the Alien Device to turn your clues into damage against the boss. However, said boss has an ability that says to "Reduce that damage to 1 unless it was dealt by a Spell, Relic, Charm, or encounter card.".

Alien Device has none of those traits, and despite being a special scenario card, it's an asset, not an encounter card. So RAW, it should only deal 1 damage per 2 clues.

Which doesn't sound very logical to me... First, why not just write that it deals 1 damage ? Second, all similar abilities on other agendas have a "2 clues for 2 damage" ratio.

Unless we're supposed to consider that the ability, while added to Alien Device (an asset), is actually from the agenda (an encounter card) ?

I think, this can be seen as legit, the way it is printed. Even though, the asset "gains the text", it is still also written on the agenda, which is clearly an encounter card. So technically, the ability comes from an encounter card AND an asset. It is also clearly the intended way, how it should work. Otherwise, like you mentioned, they would not give the ability the option to deal 2 damage to begin with, just to throw people off. — Susumu · 393
I agree though, that "Alien Device gains:" is unnecessary text, which should have been left out. That way, the ability would be clearly on the encounter card, instead of the asset, since abilities, that use uses or clues from other cards, are possible. So, at the very least, this is a messy design. — Susumu · 393
